Water is a valuable resource that we need to stay alive. It also makes household chores possible. Your water bill is a significant expense every month, but there are things you can do to make it cost less. Here are 5 ways to save water at home.

Only Run Full Loads to Save Water at Home

Appliances like dishwashers and clothes washers are more water-efficient when running full loads. Running them multiple times with only a few items inside wastes water and causes more wear and tear to the machines. Wait until you have a full load to run the dishwasher and clothes washer if possible, but never overfill them. If you don’t have a dishwasher and wash dishes by hand, you’ll save water by using the 2-sink method. Fill one sink with soapy warm water and the other with clean water to rinse the dishes instead of running the tap continually.

Low-Flow Fixtures and Faucets

You can save a lot of water by attaching inexpensive devices called aerators to your faucets. They reduce the amount of water that comes out of the tap but maintain good water pressure. Modern showerheads also use this technology. A newer toilet will use 1.28 gallons per flush, compared to the 7 gallons per flush of older toilets. Install these new types of fixtures to effortlessly save water.

Upgrade Appliances to Save Water at Home

Appliances have a lifespan of around a decade, and you can set yourself up to save water by choosing new appliances that are ENERGY STAR-certified. Research different brands and models to find the most water-efficient options. It’s worth it to spend a little more on a machine that will lower your water bill over time.

Turn Off the Tap

Leaving the tap running while washing up is unnecessary and wastes a lot of water. Many people leave the faucet running throughout the whole time they are brushing their teeth or shaving. You only need a splash of water to rinse off, so only use what you need.

Save Water While Gardening

If you have houseplants inside or a garden outside, you can repurpose water to water your plants. Use water from boiling pasta or rinsing vegetables. Let it cool down and put it in a watering can. If you have a large garden or need to water a big lawn, install a rain barrel on your property. It collects water that flows from the downspout and has a spigot that a hose or sprinkler can be hooked up to.
